A New iPhone? It’s Only a Rumor

Follow me on:

Rumors are a dime a dozen. The latest iPhone rumor, reported by Brian Caulfield in Forbes magazine, is a no-brainer. Of course there will be a new version of the iPhone. The question is when and with what new features?

Brian believes the next version of the iPhone will have 3G capabilities, which could effectively increase wireless networking speeds by as much as 10x. He notes that AT&T is expanding its 3G wireless network to 80 additional cities, with the goal of serving 350 markets with the new technology by the end of the year.

In what couldn't be just coincidence, Broadcom, the maker of the chipset used in the iPhone, started pumping out a 3G version of the chipset that's a real battery sipper, meaning the 3G service shouldn't shorten battery life.

The planets and stars seem to be lining up for a new iPhone model, but when will they be in perfect alignment? Apple is rumored to be holding a press event at the end of February; some industry watchers think its purpose is to announce a new iPhone. I think February is a little early for a new iPhone announcement. We're more likely to see an iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit), and perhaps demos of a few iPhone applications that were created with the new SDK.
