A Mac Clone for $400? Dream On

Monday April 14, 2008

At least one April Fool’s joke came in a little late this year. A company called Psystar is claiming that it will sell a $399 Intel-based PC that will use components that are compatible with the Mac OS. So far so good; nothing special there. In fact, you can buy “compatible” computers from a wide range of manufacturers, including Dell.

Where this small consulting company went beyond the pale was in claiming that it would pre-install OS X Leopard on the machine. The OS X license forbids the installation of the Mac operating system onto any products other than Apple-manufactured computers. Nice try, guys.

Back in the mid-80s a Mac magazine published an article saying that IBM was going to produce a Mac clone for less than $1000. The whole article was an April Fools joke. I personally didn’t appreciate it.
