Security Update 2008-003 Posted for OS X 10.4 and 10.5

Thursday May 29, 2008

Apple just released a security update for OS X 10.4.x and 10.5 through 10.5.2. The 10.5.3 update that was recently released already contains the security updates found in 2008-003.

I highly recommend that you download and install this update, as it corrects recently discovered security problems with some commonly used applications, including iCal and Mail.

In iCal, it’s possible to open a maliciously crafted calendar that could lead to the iCal application terminating, or worse, running arbitrary code.

Similarly, mail sent using IPv6 could cause the Mail application to terminate or to execute arbitrary code. IPv6 is the next generation of IP (Internet Protocol), designed to relieve a future Internet address shortage. The majority of Internet users, as well as Mac users, still use older IPv4 protocols and are not at risk. Still, it’s a good idea to keep on top of security issues.

Security Update 2008-003 is available through Software Update, located in the Apple menu. You can also download it from Apple’s web site.
