Firefox 3 and iWeb 2 Don't Play Well Together

Thursday June 19, 2008

It didn’t take long for problems to appear with the newest incarnation of Firefox. Firefox 3.0 is currently unable to display photo galleries created with Apple iWeb 2.0 or later.

Mozilla and Apple are aware of the problem, which seems to revolve around an issue with the way Firefox 3 interprets some of the JavaScript that iWeb uses to display slide shows and images.

A fix is available from Mozilla’s bug reporting site, but it involves replacing internal components of the iWeb application with new versions created by Mozilla. Once you replace the components, you must republish your web site using the modified version of iWeb.

An enterprising individual known simply as ‘Josh from Diamond Software’ has created a script to automate the task of hacking your copy of iWeb. You can find more information and a download link on Josh’s blog.

I haven’t tried Josh’s script, because I don’t currently publish any web sites with iWeb 2, but others report that the script does the job nicely. If you give Josh’s script a try, let us know how it works for you.

Does not work where iWeb templates have been adapted/changed. See my website for instance. Original template photo pages work but not others.
