If you haven’t already done so, download the latest version of iTunes (version 7.7), which includes support for the new iPhone 3G and the new App Store, Apple’s marketplace for iPhone and iPod Touch applications.
The App Store is already open and viewable with the latest version of iTunes, although there is one gotcha. I’m not sure if it’s because the store isn’t supposed to be live until Friday, or if it’s just a strange oversight on Apple’s part. For now, in order to access the App Store, you need to set a preference in iTunes, and enter the store through what seems to be a backdoor. Here’s how.
- Download and install iTunes 7.7.
- Launch iTunes.
- Select ‘Preferences’ from the iTunes menu.
- Select the ‘General’ tab.
- Put a check mark next to ‘Applications.’
- Click the ‘OK’ button.
- In the iTunes window, click the ‘Applications’ item in the Library sidebar.
- A dark, blank pane will display. At the bottom are two links: ‘Check for Updates’ and ‘Get More Applications.’
- Click the ‘Get More Applications’ link and the App Store will open.
Have fun!
