Apple has released the iPhone 2.0 software upgrade for the original iPhone and the iPod touch. To update your iPhone or iPod touch, you’ll need the latest version of iTunes (currently v7.7), which is available from Apple’s Software Update service (from the Apple menu, select Software Update).

Once you install the latest version of iTunes, follow the instructions below to update your iPhone or iPod touch software.
- Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer.
- iTunes will start automatically.
- Select iPhone or iPod touch from the Devices list in iTunes.
- Click the ‘Summary’ tab in the main window.
- Click the ‘Check for Update’ button.
- iTunes will download and install the latest version of the iPhone or iPod touch software.
For those of you replacing your original iPhone with the new iPhone 3G, be sure to first download the iPhone 2.0 software and upgrade your original iPhone. Version 2.0 of the iPhone software provides a secure erase option that the original iPhone software lacked. Use the secure erase function if you decide to re-purpose your old iPhone by selling it, giving it away, or handing it down to a friend or family member. The secure erase function will ensure that all of your old data is wiped from the iPhone.
