Rumor Roundup

Monday August 4, 2008

It’s not a full moon, but for some reason a gaggle of Apple-related rumors is making its way around the Internet. Is gaggle the correct term for a collection of rumors? If not, it will have to do.

Rumors about an iPhone nano have resurfaced. A while back there was a rumor that one of the products Apple would release in the 4th quarter would be a downsized version of the iPhone. The source of the current rumor is the Daily Mail, which claims that Apple will release an iPhone nano in time for Christmas sales. The Daily Mail goes on to speculate that the target market for the iPhone nano is the pay-as-you-go mobile customer, and that the device will be available through O2, the UK mobile phone service that currently offers the iPhone.

Images purporting to show the new MacBook casing have surfaced. The images show a fairly standard-looking aluminum case that resembles the current MacBook line. The source of the images is the Apple Pro web site, a Taiwanese blogger who has provided images like these before, allegedly shot at a Taiwanese manufacturing facility. To tell you the truth, the images are so generic that I don't see what all the fuss is about. Nevertheless, the Internet rumor mill is buzzing.

The last rumor is more speculation than outright rumor. Computerworld reports that Psystar, the target of an Apple lawsuit for selling a Mac clone, will use an anti-trust defense. Good luck with that! Seems to me that it's a straightforward copyright issue. The owner of a copyrighted work (in this case, the Mac OS X operating system) has the right to control where and how the work is used.
