Psystar Announces Blu-ray Options for Its Mac Clones

Wednesday October 29, 2008

Psystar has added Blu-ray optical drives as a build-to-order option on its Mac clone products. In a press announcement, Psystar president Rudy Pedraza said:

"Blu-ray has already won the format war. Not only is there fully functional and mature support for Blu-ray in other operating systems but you can now rent Blu-ray discs from almost any rental chain. Blu-ray has become pervasive technology that is being widely adopted by consumers everywhere.”

While it’s nice to see Blu-ray options, Rudy may not be aware that the Mac OS currently doesn’t support playing Blu-ray movies. The Blu-ray option that Psystar is touting only provides the ability to read or write data to a Blu-ray disk. While this might be a reasonable option for backing up and archiving data, it’s currently of little value to those who want to watch a movie on their Mac, unless they’re willing to boot into Windows first.
