Apple Releases SMC 1.3 Update to Quiet Noisy MacBook Pro Fans
Apple has released version 1.3 of the SMC firmware for the MacBook Pro (both 15- and 17-inch models). The update addresses an issue where a MacBook Pro would spin its fan up to an annoyingly loud level when handling a heavy workload. It modifies the fan’s behavior to meet the cooling requirement, while reducing the noise the fan produces.

You can download the SMC updater from the Apple web site. Once you download and launch the installer, the updater will be stored in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. The updater will start automatically; be sure to follow the onscreen instructions.

Being myself a SantaRosa MBP user and having suffered 2 logic board burnouts because of the well known overheating nvidia chip problem, I really wonder if I should apply this update. I initially thought the patch was about to INCREASE fan speed. I am really surprised it does the opposite. Any thoughts?
I have a thought: don’t install it!! I read posts from many people who had logic board failures after installing the update. I waited two weeks and installed it, thinking it probably wouldn’t happen to me. It happened to me. Luckily, Applecare covered it, but I feel very sorry for the people who didn’t purchase Applecare coverage!
