Microsoft Windows 7 Pricing Revealed – and It’s Not Pretty
We don’t normally cover Windows issues here at About: Macs, but when I came across the planned pricing for the various versions of Windows 7, my jaw dropped.
To put this in perspective: Windows 7 is mainly just a fix for all the problems in Vista. In fact, it’s been suggested that the upgrade should be free for Vista users. But to be fair to Microsoft, Windows 7 does include new features.
I consider Windows 7 to be on the same track as Snow Leopard. Both new operating systems attempt to consolidate and improve core performance and existing features, with just a modicum of new features to make everyone happy.
So, what’s the pricing? Windows 7 is available in multiple editions; each edition offers an upgrade price and a full license price.
Windows 7 Pricing:Home Premium: $120/upgrade; $200/full Professional: $200/upgrade; $300/full Ultimate: $220/upgrade; $320/fullSnow Leopard Pricing:
$29/single-user upgrade; $49/family (5-user) upgrade; $129/full
I can hardly wait for the newest Microsoft Ads. “We gave a customer $1700 to go find a laptop… wait, better make that $2000.”


With PC types — it may very well be the point of no return. Pricing is whatever the traffic will bear. So when does the masses dig their feet in and do not buy? Think in terms of Gas — grumbles and still there is no boycot.
I love the .NET development environment. I think Microsoft’s .NET technology is nothing short of awesome.
But with that said, I have to agree with a lot of the complaints that “you Mac types” have about Microsoft these days. I saw it all before when Microsoft took IBM apart, byte by byte. It happened when the MBA’s and marketing types took over. IBM lost their soul.
Since Bill Gates left, Steve Ballmer – an MBA and marketing type – has been in charge and it just hasn’t been the same company.
