15-inch MacBook Pro Gets Anti-Glare Screen Option

Apple has brought back the anti-glare screen as a $50 option for the 15-inch MacBook Pro. The anti-glare screen was previously only available as an option for the 17-inch MacBook Pro.

There was a time when anti-glare screens were the norm at Apple, but they were eventually replaced by glossy displays. While glossy displays do deliver deeper blacks and more vivid colors, they also suffer from glare, a failing that can quickly overshadow their other color advantages.

Pro users complained loud and hard about the loss of the anti-glare screen. By bringing the anti-glare screen back as an option for the 15-inch MacBook Pro, Apple has signaled that it hears and will meet the needs of its pro users.

Anti-glare screens are available with the Apple Cinema HD Display (30-inch), and as an option of the 17 and 15-inch MacBook Pros.

You probably won’t be able to walk into a retail store and walk out with an anti-glare-screen-equipped MacBook Pro since as of this writing, the anti-glare screen is only available as a custom configuration from the Apple Store.

Great news! Now I just hope Apple brings back the Express-Card/34 slot and interchangeable batteries before I’m ready to replace my late 2007 15″ MacBook Pro.

Hi Brent,

Adding the SD slot was a good idea, but it certainly doesn’t replace the functionality of the Express-Card/34 slot.

As for batteries. I think the days of removable batteries are drawing to a close. As batteries become more powerful — that is, able to store energy for longer periods of time — there is less and less need to be able to replace a battery to keep a laptop running. Replacing an end-of-life battery is actually a pretty easy process that anyone who can wield a screwdriver should be able to accomplish (at least in the current designs).

They don’t have an anti-glare option for the Unibody edge-to-edge glass display. I prefer the sleek look of the glass display but not the glare. I was able to find a cover from ViewGuard that killed the glare and covered the entire front glass display from corner to corner. Great stuff!
