Upgrading Leopard: Change Your Spots

By , About.com GuideAugust 28, 2009

Follow me on:

I spent some of my day today upgrading my Mac Pro from Leopard (OS X 10.5) to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). Despite my best efforts, I didn’t run into any problems. Of course, I haven’t had time yet to test all the applications I normally use, but so far, my basic applications seem to work fine under Snow Leopard.

I’ve posted a step-by-step guide for performing a basic upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard, which I think will be the most common upgrade path for most current Leopard users. I will be posting a clean install guide as well, so if erasing your hard drive and starting with a fresh copy of the OS is the path you plan to take, stay tuned.

I’ve been a Mac guy since the sledgehammer hit the screen back in 1984. I’ve got to say, this is the best OS yet. Combined with the powerful new Intel-based Macs, you just can’t beat it for speed, stability, and security. So far, no problems here. All my existing apps are running just fine – even all of the Adobe CS4 programs (and even GoLive CS3) are purring like a snow kitty!

This is another reason I prefer Apple to Microsoft: The new Mac OS is a refined, faster, leaner version of the previous OS with no major additions for just $29. Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack, er, uh, Windows 7 is a bloated, rebranded version of Vista with no major additions for $119 to $219.

Keep ‘em coming, Apple. I’m proud of you!

WHOA — apparently Snow Leopard does NOT support Firefox, and many of the programs and online work sites I need are only accessible thru Firefox. WHAT GIVES?? Is there a PATCH coming? I cannot upgrade if I can’t access Firefox…

Can this be true about no Firefox with Snow Leopard? I use Firefox exclusively. I just
paid for and received my 2 copies of Snow.

No, it’s not true. I installed SN the day it came out and FF ran just fine.

Hi Ruth,

I’ve been using Firefox 3.5.2 since I installed Snow Leopard, and have not had a problem with it yet.

However, I have heard from some readers who had a problem traceable to one or more Firefox plug-ins. You may wish to disable your plug-ins, and then just enable the ones you need. There may be a few older plug-ins you no longer need, and one or more of them may be what’s causing the problem.

I installed Snow Leopard on 9/2. Firefox has been and still “hangs.” The problem is with one or more add-ons but I can’t get in to disable. Real Player only plays sound, no picture. Quicktime X is a no-show. Websites with Java Applets o will load in Safari only, no in Opera or Camino.

The only problem I had with snow leopard was with Norton Antivirus 11. I tried several times to reinstall it, but no joy. I finally tried another anti virus program, ProtectMac and it’s working fine so far. It even found a windows trojan that hadn’t been found before. The only thing I’m upset about is that I had just bought the norton upgrade and now will have to buy ProtectMac.
