Psystar’s Rebel EFI Software Allows OS X to Run on PCs

Friday October 23, 2009

Psystar, in yet another example of being unclear on the concept, has released Rebel EFI, software that automates some of the process of installing OS X on a PC. The retail price is $89.99; the introductory price is$49.99. The software is currently available as a free, time-limited demo.

The demo is restricted beyond the time limitation, however. In addition to limiting you to running an OS for only two hours, the demo doesn't allow the permanent installation of an OS. It also won't install all drivers until after you purchase the software. That means you probably won't be able to determine whether your PC's hardware is adequately supported by the Psystar drivers until after you pay for the software, at which point, it's a little late. Hardly an effective way to demo a product or attract customers, especially when driver and hardware compatibility is the most important issue when trying to get OS X running on a PC.

Psystar is also starting a service for Rebel EFI customers called Psystar Labs. If you're having problems getting a piece of hardware to work with Rebel EFI and OS X, you can send the hardware to Psystar Labs, which will then attempt to ensure the device is compatible with Rebel EFI and OS X.

Is it just me or is that downright bizarre? I can download and install a time-limited demo that won't actually let me know whether or not my hardware is compatible until after I buy the software. If the software doesn't work, I have to send my hardware to Psystar (presumably on my dime) so they can verify whether it's compatible or not. In the meantime, I'm expected to find an alternate way to work while my hardware is in transit and undergoing testing for some unspecified period of time.

Good luck with that!
