Readers' Choice Awards 2013 - Winners in 8 Mac Categories

The Best Mac Products and Services as Chosen by About: Macs Readers

By

When spring rolls around, I know it's time to announce the Readers' Choice Awards winners. This is the 4th year that About: Macs has participated in the awards, which have been running for 5 years.

We missed out on the first year, but we've more than made up for it by having you, our readers, pick the best of the best in Mac-related products and services every year since then.

This year, About: Macs hosted 8 categories. Since this is an entirely reader-driven award, we first asked you to nominate the contenders for the awards. After the nomination phased closed, we selected the top 3 to 5 contenders in each category, and then asked you to vote to decide who would come out on top.

And now it's time to reveal the winners. But first, congratulations to everyone: the nominees, the finalists, and the winners. There are no losers here. Even if they didn't ultimately win, each of the finalists was among the top 3, 4, or 5 in its category.

Our sincere thanks to all of you who took the time to enter nominees and vote for the winners.

1Password is a password manager that makes life easier on a Mac or iOS, Windows, or Android device. With its ability to sync across multiple devices, 1Password keeps your logins, passwords, and other information at your fingertips.

This category had some of the fiercest competition, with 1Password pulling ahead only in the last few days. With thousands of votes counted and then certified by our auditing team, the final results are as follows:

  • 1Password: 55%
  • Drive Genius: 32%
  • CleanMyMac: 11%
  • DaisyDisk: 1%
  • Gemini: 1 %

Note: Due to rounding errors, the voting percentage may not add up to 100%.

Best Mac Backup Application Winner - Carbon Copy Cloner, Bombich Software, Inc.

Carbon Copy Cloner is a backup and cloning app that has been a favorite of About: Macs readers for many years. This is the fourth year in a row that Carbon Copy Cloner has won this category.

However, this year it faced a real challenge from Data Backup 3, another popular app. A clear winner wasn't evident until the final hours of voting.

Here are the final results for the Best Mac Backup Application:

  • Carbon Copy Cloner: 37%
  • Data Backup 3: 33%
  • SuperDuper: 14%
  • Time Machine: 13%
  • CopyCatX: 1%

Note: Due to rounding errors, the voting percentage may not add up to 100%.

Best Mac Browser Winner - Safari, Apple, Inc.

Safari, Apple's web browser, once again won the Best Mac Browser category. This year, the number of contenders was reduced from the usual five to just three. We thought this might have created an opportunity for one of the other two browsers to make inroads, since the votes were divided among fewer competitors, but Safari still came out on top.

That doesn't mean it was an easy win, though. There were many times during the voting process when all three browsers were in a dead heat, with less than a percentage point separating them. But once again, the last few days of voting turned the tables, and Safari pulled ahead.

The final totals for the Best Mac Browser are:

  • Safari: 44%
  • Firefox: 30%
  • Chrome: 25%

Note: Due to rounding errors, the voting percentage may not add up to 100%.

Best App for Running Windows - Parallels, Parallels IP Holding GmbH

Parallels was the first virtualization app for Intel-based Macs. This popular app has won this category for three years in a row.

While the voters didn't tell us why they prefer Parallels, one reason may be the ease it offers in running Windows and OS X applications side-by-side, without having to reboot your Mac. Parallels is also a performance leader in the Mac virtualization market.

Parallels started out with a slight lead in early voting, and just kept on going. By the end, it was the clear winner.

The final poll totals for the Best App for Running Windows are:

  • Parallels: 60%
  • VMware Fusion: 37%
  • Oracle VirtualBox: 1%

Note: Due to rounding errors, the voting percentage may not add up to 100%.

Best Mac Word Processor - LibreOffice, The Document Foundation

LibreOffice is an open source office suite that includes all the usual apps and tools. One of the many things that sets it apart from its competitors is its price; it's free. Of course, this category focused on the word processor component of LibreOffice, but it still won hands down. Congratulations, LibreOffice, for your first win in the Readers' Choice Awards, and a stunning win at that.

The vote totals for the Best Mac Word Processor are:

  • LibreOffice: 65%
  • Microsoft Word: 17%
  • Pages: 11%
  • Mariner Write: 4%

Note: Due to rounding errors, the voting percentage may not add up to 100%.

Best Mac Image Editor - Photoshop, Adobe, Inc.

Photoshop from Adobe has long been the standard bearer in the Mac image editing community; it's also very popular. So, we weren't surprised to see it come out on top in the voting for the second year in a row.

It wasn't a sure thing, though. All four products were in the running at one time or another, as one product leapfrogged ahead of another and then fell behind again. In the end, Photoshop received the most votes in the last couple of weeks.

The final totals for the Best Mac Image Editor are:

  • Photoshop: 49%
  • GraphicConverter: 23%
  • Pixelmator: 21%
  • Acorn: 7%

Note: Due to rounding errors, the voting percentage may not add up to 100%.

This is the third winning year in a row for Plex, a versatile app that can turn a Mac into a home's media center. Plex started out slow in the voting this year, with plenty of competition from its rivals. But Plex finally pulled ahead and held its lead during the last days of voting.

The voting totals for the Best Mac Home Theater App or Product are:

  • Plex: 51%
  • AppleTV: 36%
  • XBMC: 11%

Note: Due to rounding errors, the voting percentage may not add up to 100%.

Best Mac Peripheral Reseller - OWC, Other World Computing

Other World Computing, popularly known as OWC, won in a landslide. This is the second year for the Best Mac Peripheral Reseller category, and OWC ran away with it last year, too. Although the category has only existed for two years, OWC holds the crown as the only entrant to win its category every year. Can they make it three in a row? We'll find out next year.

Perhaps even more impressive, OWC started out strong and then raced to the finish, without ever looking back at its competitors.

Here's how the voting went in the Best Mac Peripheral Reseller category:

  • Other World Computing: 95%
  • Small Dog Electronics: 3%
  • New Egg: 1%

Note: Due to rounding errors, the voting percentage may not add up to 100%.
