Vista supports two types of installations: upgrade and custom. If you're installing Vista to a new virtual machine, as you will be in this guide, your only option will be a custom install.

Choose the Installation Type

  1. Select the type of installation you want to perform.

    • Upgrade. This option, which is only available if Windows is already installed, keeps your current files and settings, and upgrades your current version of Windows to Vista.

    • Custom. This option installs a clean copy of Vista. This will be the option that most individuals will select when installing Vista to a Fusion virtual machine (actually, as mentioned above, it will be their only option).

  2. Click the ‘Custom (advanced)’ button.

Select a Location for the Installation

  1. Highlight the virtual disk you created during the Fusion standard install. It will be the only disk listed, and will probably be called Disk 0.

  2. Click the ‘Next’ button.

Vista will begin the installation process.
