The Mac Desktop

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

The Mac desktop is much like a standard desk. It provides a place where you can accomplish much of your work, as well as store things for easy access. Like a standard desk, it can become overly cluttered with files and folders.

In addition to displaying files and folders, the desktop also displays mounted hard drives, drive partitions, CDs, DVDs, iPods, and memory cards. You can quickly and easily access any desktop item by double-clicking its icon.

You can find the Desktop folder in the sidebar of any open Finder window, as well as in each user account folder in the Users folder on your main hard drive.

Also Known As: desktop, Desktop folder
Alternate Spellings: Desktop
Examples:
When you insert a CD or DVD into your Mac, its icon will appear on the desktop. To access the item, just double-click its icon.
