Definition:
A driver is a small software program designed to allow a piece of hardware, such as a printer, to communicate with a computer and its operating system (and vice versa). Drivers are operating system specific as well as device specific.
Examples:
Manufacturers update drivers to be compatible with operating system updates, or to fix any incompatibility problems, so it's a good idea to check a manufacturer's web site for new drivers on a regular basis.
