Inkjet Printer

By Tom Nelson, About.com

Definition:

An inkjet printer uses specially designed print heads that can spray tiny droplets of ink directly onto paper in specific patterns. A print head may contain hundreds or thousands of nozzles. Each nozzle can only print one color of ink, although some inkjet printers build up layers of color.

Most inkjet printers are four-color printers (cyan, magenta, yellow, black), although six-color inkjet printers are also available. Inkjet printers may combine three or four colors in one cartridge, or have separate cartridges for each color.

Most dedicated photo printers are inkjet printers, although some dye-sublimation (also known as thermal) photo printers are also available.

Generally speaking, inkjet printers are better at printing photos than color laser printers, but not as good at printing text as a monochrome laser printer.
