Laser Printer

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

A laser printer is a printer that uses a light source (usually a laser) to project an image onto a charged surface (usually a rotating drum). The light 'paints' an image by stripping the surface of charged particles. Toner is then applied to the surface, where it will only adhere to areas that are still charged. Paper is then passed over the surface, transferring the toner image to the paper. Monochrome laser printers use a single color and a single pass to print an image; color laser printers use multiple toner colors and multiple passes to print a color image.

Laser printers are available in color and monochrome versions, in a wide variety of price ranges.

Examples:
Laser printers are better at printing text than inkjet printers, and usually have lower per-page printing costs.
