By Tom Nelson, About.com

Definition:

It might be a read-only device, such as a standard CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, or a rewritable device, such as a CD-RW, DVD-RAM, or DVD-RW drive. Most modern desktop and laptop computers include a rewritable drive, which allows you to back up files to CDs or DVDs, as well as burn music or photo CDs.
