Snow Leopard continues the Apple tradition of naming OS X versions after big cats. Snow Leopard, more formally known as OS X 10.6, is the sixth in the series of Unix-based operating systems from Apple.
Snow Leopard marks a turning point, turning OS X into an Intel-only, 64-bit OS. With Snow Leopard, Apple removes support for the older PowerPC processor architecture used in past Macs. By stripping out support for older Macs, Apple is able to not only provide a robust 64-bit OS, but a smaller, better performing, and far more stable OS than ever before.
Apple will release Snow Leopard sometime in September 2009.
