Apple TV is a media player for home theater that can stream audio, video, and images to a TV. Apple TV supports HD movie streaming, and TV and movie rentals from Apple's iTunes Store or from Netflix.
EyeTV software, when used with a supported TV tuner, turns your Mac into a powerful DVR (Digital Video Recorder) that allows you to record shows, pause and rewind live TV broadcasts, schedule recordings, edit videos, and watch TV. You can burn the shows you record to DVD, or export them to other devices, including iPads, iPods, or iPhones. You can also export them to iTunes.
Netflix Streaming, part of the Netflix video rental system, streams movies, TV shows, concerts, and just about any video content it has in its streaming library, directly to your Mac, Apple TV, iPhone, or iPad.
Plex is media center software that can catalog and play a wide range of audio, video, and image formats. Plex software uses a 'big screen' interface, letting you control the software easily from across the room while you watch your big screen TV.
VLC is a media player similar to Apple's QuickTime or DVD Player software. While VLC is similar, it supports a much wider range of video and audio formats, and can be used as a media converter. Some users believe that VLC's video playback is of a higher quality than Apple's DVD Player.
