When there’s a chill in the air and pumpkins popping up everywhere, you know it’s almost time for ghouls and goblins to make their Halloween appearance. Many of us decorate our houses for Halloween, but why stop there? If you spend a lot of time with your Mac, consider adding Halloween-themed icons to your Mac’s desktop.
All of the Halloween icon sites presented here provide icons that will work with OS X and the Mac desktop. So have fun and be afraid (but just a little).
1. Icon Drawer
Icon Drawer produces icon sets for developers and Mac enthusiasts. While most of Icon Drawer’s work involves creating royalty-free icons and custom icons for specific use, it also has a few icon sets available for free, including a Jack-o-Lantern and Harry Potter’s Sorting Hat.
Icons from Icon Drawer are available as icons for Mac OS X and as PNG files for general use.
2. The Iconfactory
As its name implies, the Iconfactory pumps out icon after icon for all manner of uses. From custom designs to free icon sets, you’re likely to find just the icons you need at the Iconfactory. Desktop wallpapers are also available.
Among the free Halloween icons at the Iconfactory is The Nightmare Before Christmas, a collection of icons featuring the characters from Tim Burton’s movie.
Icons from The Iconfactory are available for Mac OS X and Windows.
3. DeviantART
DeviantART is a site that brings artists together to share and sell their works. The DeviantART site has everything from traditional art to cartoons and comics. While there is no icon sub-category, you can search for HalloweenIcons and find a wide assortment of offerings.
Icon sets may not be made specifically for the Mac, but you’ll find lots of images and icons that artists are willing to share.
4. Floina
Floina’s collection of icons may not be as large as some others, but there is a distinctive style. Both the Zombie Dolls and the Die Lustige Farm (The Funny Farm) collections seem appropriate for use as Halloween icons.
5. Warrior Poet (Jamie Adam McCanless)
Jamie McCanless loves icons, and at present has 1,874 OS X icons on the Warrior Poet web site. The holiday collection includes three icon sets just for Halloween: Stone Groud, Boo-galoo, and WarP o’Lanterns. There are tons more icons, as well as other graphics available, so while you’re at the Warrior Poet web site, be sure to take a look around.
6. Turbomilk: Monsters
Turbomilk’s Monster collection of icons comes from designer Eugene Artebasov. According to the Turbomilk web site, if you take a close look at Eugene, there are monsters inside.
Luckily for us, some of the monsters escaped as icons for OS X.
